Hilliard Airpark preserves Florida’s aviation heritage as one of state’s last public grass runways

Staff report

In an era when most airports have transitioned to paved runways, Hilliard Airpark stands as a living reminder of Florida’s aviation heritage, offering pilots and aviation enthusiasts a glimpse into the golden age of backcountry flying.

“We’ve got a 3,600-foot grass runway out here, one of the few remaining public-use grass airfields in the state of Florida,” said Mike Swain, airport manager at Hilliard Airpark. “And we’re quite active on the weekends, and we have a great community here.”

The airpark, designated 01J, is one of fewer than 30 public grass airports remaining in Fla., according to the facility’s website. The field features 25 private hangars, all currently occupied by residents and aviation enthusiasts from Hilliard and surrounding communities.

Swain said the facility serves multiple purposes for the community, including emergency operations. “The airport’s also available for emergency purposes, so it plays an important role in times of emergency,” he said.

The airpark offers a full-service FBO building for transient pilots visiting the town of Hilliard. The facility includes a pilot lounge, conference room, self-serve snacks and beverages, bathrooms with shower, a billiard table and flight planning center. Self-serve 100LL aviation fuel is available for $5.29 per gallon.

The facility describes itself as a throwback to a time when flying embodied the essence of adventure and the local airport was a beacon for those with lofty dreams.

“I encourage anyone to just come on out and visit on the weekends. There’s usually a fair amount of activity out here on the weekends,” Swain said.

Hilliard Airpark is located in Nassau County’s town of Hilliard, approximately 20 miles west of Fernandina Beach. For more information, visit hilliardairpark.com.
