It’s Shrimp Fest weekend, and the Elm Street Sportsman Association can help with that shrimp craving today. The civic club is holding a fundraiser today at the pavilion at the MLK Jr. Center, starting at 4 p.m.
Members will be serving up shrimp, whiting and chicken wings along with baked beans, potato salad and hush puppies for $15. They’re also making crab cakes.
The 5K run is on Saturday at Main Beach. The 29th annual race begins at 8 a.m., and the one-miler for runners 12 and under starts at 8:45 a.m.

Poteat surf champ

Noah Poteat, 18, of Fernandina Beach captured the open men’s and explorer men’s titles at the National Scholastic Surfing Association East Coast Championships April 16-19 in New Smyrna Beach. Congratulations, Noah!
ESA Southeast Regional results
Four local surfers placed in the Eastern Surfing Association Southeast Regionals April 10-12 in Melbourne Beach. Derek Carlson and Arya Rodriguez both placed fourth in their respective quarterfinal heats; Rider Smith was third overall in his final heat; and Lani Rodriguez was second overall in her final heat.
Hornets move on
The Yulee High School flag football team won its regional playoff game, beating host Arnold 26-6 Tuesday in Panama City. The YHS Hornets head to Paxon Monday, May 4, for a regional semifinal matchup with the Eagles. Winners advance to the title game May 7.
Lifters place at region
Fernandina Beach and Yulee weightlifters made it to the podium at the region meet.
Fernandina Beach High School’s Gabe Marquez placed third in traditional in the 219-pound weight class with 575 pounds total, and teammate Clay Hicks was third in traditional at 154 pounds, with 520 pounds total.
Yulee High School’s Noah Williams and Turtle Ricks won their weight classes at the region meet and have qualified for state.
FBMS Pirates beat Yulee for title
The Fernandina Beach Middle School baseball team topped Yulee 14-3 to hang on to the district championship trophy.
Firefighters undefeated champs

Fernandina Beach Fire Union Local 2836 competed again in a dodgeball tournament, held in support of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The undefeated champs retained their title.
