The football season is fast approaching, and the Pirates are gearing up for their preseason
matchup with host Mount Dora Christian Academy on Aug. 15. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. for the
classic, a preview for Fernandina Beach High School’s second season in the Sunshine State
Athletic Conference’s Atlantic Division.
The regular season opener is Aug. 22 at home with the Hilliard Flashes.
“We’re really looking forward to this season, collectively as a Pirate community,” said Blake
Willis, head football coach at FBHS. “Lots of things are going well for us.
“We have some increased numbers, which have allowed us to bring back a JV schedule. That is
huge for the development of the younger guys.
“Coaching staff has also increased in numbers. I actually have a full staff, and some positions
actually have two coaches. We’re just trying to build on the success we had last year while still
trying to establish the culture that will allow for us to not only have success this season but for
future seasons, as well.”
Fernandina travels to Wolfson Aug. 29, and the junior varsity hosts Providence the night before
for its season opener. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
The Pirates play back-to-back in their September debut. The JV Pirates host Yulee at 6 p.m.
Sept. 4, and the varsity is at home Sept. 5 with Duval Charter for a conference game. Kickoff is
slated for 7 p.m.
In-county matchups include a trip to Callahan on Sept. 26 to take on the Warriors and a trip over
the bridge on Oct. 10 for a matchup with the Yulee Hornets. Kickoff for both is at 7 p.m.
“Overall, though we think it will be a good one. Y’all come out and see the Pirates on a Friday
night this fall,” Willis said. “You won’t be disappointed.”
