Yulee hosts four-team track and field meet

The track and field season got underway Feb. 11 in Yulee, with a four-team meet. Fernandina Beach, Hilliard and Camden County high schools participated.

For the boys, Camden County won with a score of 133, beating FBHS (97.5), Yulee (71.5) and Hilliard (10).

The FBHS girls won with a 93, defeating Camden (84.5), Yulee (77.5) and Hilliard (22).

In the boys 100-meter run, Tre Vazquez (YHS) finished third, with a time of 11.57 seconds, and Devin Murray (FBHS) was fifth, in 11.86. Vazquez was also second in the 200-meter run, in 22.92; teammate Joshua Barnes was fourth in 23.26. Barnes was second in the 400-meter run, in 53.03; teammate John Huffman was third in 53.80.

FBHS’s Jack Janzow won the boys 800-meter run, in 2:06.39. Teammates John Martin (2:10.51) and Austin Dimas (2:12.21) were second and third, respectively. Hilliard’s Matthew Siervent (2:15.80) finished fourth. Martin won the 1,600-meter run, in 4:49.74; Malik Ravenell (FBHS) was fourth, in 5:03.50; and Yulee’s Parker Dunham was fifth, in 5:04.33.

FBHS swept the boys high jump, with Sam Colwell leading the way, with a school-record 6-foot-3.25-inch mark, for first place. Hayden Powell was second, with 5 feet 11.5 inches, and Ethan Watts was third, with 5 feet 9.75 inches. Yulee’s Sebastian Lopes-Santiago and Jayden Riddix tied for fourth, with leaps of 5 feet 3.75 inches.

Beckham Rohe of FBHS won the boys long jump, with a 20-foot-10-inch leap. Lopes-Santiago was third, in 18 feet 10.75 inches, and Powell was fourth, in 18 feet 10.5 inches. Yulee’s Harrison Grunewald was fifth, with 18 feet 5.75 inches.

Ethan Smith (FBHS) was third in the shot put, with a 33-feet-9.25-inch throw.

Yulee’s Taylor Peterson took third place in the girls 100-meter run, in 13.47 seconds. Teammate Deborah Hoffman was fifth, in 13.67. Peterson was second in the 200-meter run, with a time of 27.70. FBHS’s Passion Roberts was fifth, in 28.54.

Yulee’s Kailah Thompson (1:06.73) and Hoffman (1:07.39) finished second and third, respectively, in the 400-meter run. Hilliard’s Hailey Dias (1:09.73) and Kenzie Loveland (1:11.32) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

FBHS’s Maya Kovalcik won the girls 1,600-meter run, in 5:21.20. Yulee’s Rooney Walker finished second, in 6:04.42. FBHS swept the next three spots, with Taylor Newman (6:07.12) in third, Kiera Michalski (6:34.05) in fourth and Elizabeth Smith (7:00.61) in fifth.

Lillian Adams won the high jump for FBHS, with a 3-foot-8-inch mark.

Dias was second in the long jump, with 14 feet 4.5 inches. Elaina Mersereau (FBHS) was third, in 13 feet 11 inches, and Yulee’s Veronica Pough (13 feet 3.5 inches) and La’myah Kirton (13 feet 2.75 inches) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Aubry Alexander and Emma Gibbs of FBHS took first and second place, respectively, in the shot put. Alexander had a throw of 27 feet 6 inches, and Gibbs threw 27 feet 2.5 inches. Yulee’s Rylee Corcoran (26 feet 2.25 inches) finished third. FBHS secured fourth and fifth, with Layla Johnson throwing 24 feet 10.5 inches and Mersereau throwing 22 feet 9 inches.
