Historic American Beach 90th Anniversary Gala held on Dec. 27 at The Preserve at The Amelia Island River Club welcomed 180 elegantly dressed guests. The views of the river, marsh and sunset were a magnificent backdrop to the stunning cream, gold and red decor. Blue sky, brilliant sunshine, and unusually warm winter weather were Mother Nature’s gift.
Dr. Beverly Smith Davis chaired the 90th Anniversary Planning Committee that created and implemented a year-long calendar of 11 outstanding events under the theme: “Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Embracing the Future – A 90-Year Journey.” These volunteers are members of the three organizations committed to preserving the history, legacy and existence of this community and showcasing its growth: American Beach Property Owners’ Association Inc., Friends of American Beach Inc. and A.L. Lewis Museum. After Rev. Dr. R.B. Holmes Jr. said a prayer, the guests stood and sang The Negro National Anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
Dr. Davis greeted everyone, praised the 90th Anniversary Planning Committee members for their tireless effort and thanked the sponsors and also the 28 local businesses that donated gift cards. These were given as thank-yous to the delight of attendees whose names were randomly drawn.
A wonderful time was had by all. Puff ‘n Stuff served elegant elevated hors d’oeuvres. The fabulous sounds of saxophonist/DJ Pierre Kendrick and also the Groove Coalition Band kept guests on the dance floor. Boots were on the ground as Roalisa Harden led line dancing.
As one guest shared: “I feel ‘The Beach Lady’s’ spirit. I really do.” And members within the community often acknowledge that they stand on her shoulders!
