The Hornets jumped out to a 19-9 first-quarter lead over the host Pirates on Dec. 5. The Yulee High School boys basketball team outscored Fernandina Beach 13-9 in the second quarter en route to a 69-65 victory over the rival.
Sophomore Ben Newby led Yulee with 21 points, but he wasn’t the only Hornet in double figures. Junior Chase Cannone and senior Harrison Grunewald scored 10 apiece, and junior Micah Bazill had 13.
Eli Lucio, a junior, pulled down 10 rebounds and had a block. Newby also had five assists and a pair of steals.
Yulee (3-4) lost to Eagle’s View 70-34 on Dec. 8 and to Ridgeview 52-49 on Dec. 9. The Hornets play at Terry Parker at 7 p.m. Dec. 1, host Wolfson at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 17 and head to Charlton County Dec. 18 for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the Indians.
The Pirates (3-3) beat Mount Dora 63-58 and Terry Parker 51-24 leading up to the Yulee game. FBHS heads to Englewood Dec. 12 for a 7:30 p.m. showdown with the Rams. The Pirates play at Providence Dec. 15 and at Baker County Dec. 16. Tip-off for both games is 7:30 p.m. They are back home Dec. 18 with Upper St. Clair. Game time is 7 p.m.
