City of Fernandina Beach project updates for the week of Sept. 22, 2025

Fernandina Beach Deputy City Manager, Jeremiah Glisson

Welcome to this edition of our weekly community update, designed to keep you informed about ongoing developments and initiatives throughout our city. This week’s report features highlights of recent progress, updates on municipal projects, and key announcements impacting our community. Providing transparency and engagement is both a privilege and a responsibility we take seriously. Your input and involvement continue to play a vital role in shaping our collective decisions and establishing priorities as we work together toward our shared goals.

Projects/Operations:

  • Repairs of manholes on Eighth Street are scheduled to be completed the week of Sept. 22.
  • The Paid Parking Political Committee Initiative petition has been certified by the Nassau County Supervisor of Elections. Consideration by the City Commission has been placed on the Oct. 21 meeting agenda.
  • Due to other project delays, the rehabilitation of Atlantic Avenue has been pushed to summer 2026. This FDOT-funded project is expected to take 12 to 18 months to complete.
  • The Grocery Getter shuttle is still in service and provides transportation twice a week to Winn-Dixie off island. The times and pickup locations are provided at www.fbfl.us.
  • The MLK Jr. Sports fields redevelopment project is 90% designed. Plans will be shared with city advisory boards and the Commission over the next few weeks. This project is scheduled to commence in spring 2026.
  • The North Second St. streetscape redevelopment continues on schedule. The rebuild of the road and the installation of new sidewalks and curbing are currently underway.
  • The Peg-Leg Pete pirate statue will soon be removed for preservation. This statue is located near the Train Depot downtown.
  • The city of St. Marys has submitted a request for proposals for a ferry service that will connect St. Marys and Fernandina Beach.
  • We are thrilled to announce that the city has been awarded $50,000 through T-Mobile’s Hometown Grant Program. This funding is for the installation of a climbing playground at the waterfront, which will give families a scenic place to gather, play and enjoy downtown. T-Mobile selects recipients in partnership with Main Street America. Representatives will have a check presentation on stage at the Island Hop Craft Beer Festival on Oct. 4.
  • Utilities crews repaired a challenging water main break on Atlantic Avenue near the Nassau County School Board office.
  • The city of Fernandina Beach fiscal year 2025-26 begins Oct. 1.
