The Nassau Sport Fishing Association presented a total of $20,000 in scholarships to six seniors from Nassau County high schools this year on June 25 during the club’s monthly social gathering. The recipients’ families also attended.
The recipients of the $4,000 NSFA scholarships are Braylon Crosby and Loraya Poindexter from Yulee High School, Shelby Ann Lyle from Fernandina Beach High School and Brody Singley from West Nassau High School.
Crosby will attend Florida State College at Jacksonville and pursue a degree in nursing. Poindexter is attending the University of North Florida and pursuing a degree in nursing, as well. Lyle plans to attend the University of Central Florida and major in speech pathology. Singley is heading to Florida Atlantic University to major in biology (pre-med).
The recipients of the $2,000 merit scholarships are Hailey Nicole Reynolds from Fernandina Beach High School and Carson Harris from Yulee High School.
Reynolds will attend the University of Florida and major in pediatric neurology. Harris is heading to the Aveda Institute of Jacksonville for cosmetology certification.
Joe Wise chaired the club’s scholarship committee, which also included Marilyn Mrozek, Heath Whittle and Jef Bohn. They made their selections based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, community service, financial need and an essay plus recommendation.
These scholarships are available because of NSFA’s annual fundraising events, which include the Fernandina Beach Kingfish Tournament/Fishing Rodeo, and also donations from individual club members. The club is especially grateful to it many tournaments sponsors and anglers for financial support for these scholarships.
The NSFA, founded in 1983, is a nonprofit organization created to develop and promote saltwater fishing in Nassau County while adhering to state, federal and local regulations; to encourage compliance with rules of water safety by club members and the general public; and to promote youth-related community activities.
The Nassau Sport Fishing Association holds its monthly business meetings on the second Wednesday, and the monthly social get-together is held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Kraft Ten Acres, 961023 Buccaneer Trail, Fernandina Beach.
