Cheryl Plaugher has announced her campaign for the Nassau County Commission District 4 seat, according to a recent release.

Plaugher said residents across both rural and suburban communities are not asking government to “promise the impossible,” but instead are asking elected officials to fully utilize every legal tool available to protect neighborhoods, infrastructure, property values and quality of life before approving projects that could permanently alter the county, the release said.

“Residents are not asking government to stop growth entirely,” said Plaugher. “They are asking elected officials to fight for enforceable protections, practice honest communication, and provide transparency before decisions are made that affect families and communities for generations.”

Plaugher’s statement comes after recent public outcry regarding industrial growth, rezoning decisions and lack of communication regarding large-scale development and infrastructure-related projects, including a potential data center.

Public records reviewed by residents reportedly show prior county contact with development interests connected to projects that were later publicly characterized in much narrower terms. While no formal application may have existed at that specific point in time, Plaugher said the issue is larger than any one project, said the release.

“Not having a formal application on file is not the same as no prior contact, no prior discussions, or no reason for public concern,” Plaugher said. “Good government means giving residents the fullest picture possible early in the process, not a carefully curated version of events after controversy begins.”

Plaugher also addressed broader concerns about how local officials communicate with residents regarding growth impacts and rezonings. “County commissioners may not always have the legal authority to outright deny every project,” Plaugher said. “But they absolutely have the ability to negotiate conditions, demand buffers, require infrastructure improvements, protect surrounding neighborhoods, and advocate for the people who elected them. Leadership is about fighting for your community using every legal tool available, not simply approving projects and saying nothing else can be done.”

Plaugher referenced concerns raised by residents surrounding a proposed heavy industrial rezoning near Tupelo Plantation, where community members and even commissioners publicly opposed the project due to concerns involving traffic, infrastructure strain, noise, environmental impacts and long-term compatibility with surrounding residential areas, yet it was ultimately approved, according to the release. “Residents deserve consistency between what is said in community meetings and how elected officials ultimately vote,” Plaugher stated. “Trust in government is built through honesty, transparency, and representation that reflects the voices of the people most affected.”

Plaugher said her campaign will focus on responsible growth, infrastructure planning, public transparency, fiscal responsibility and preserving the character and quality of life that residents value throughout Nassau County.

“This campaign is not about stopping progress,” Plaugher said. “It is about making sure growth happens responsibly, transparently, and with the community at the table before decisions are finalized.”

The 2026 Nassau County Republican primary election will take place Aug. 18 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
