Bulldogs hand Hornets first loss of season

By Beth Jones

The Hornets lost their first game of the season Friday night. The Yulee High School football team (7-1) lost to host Flagler Palm Coast 42-14.

“I didn’t get us prepared for their unbalanced looks,” said Kyle Dougherty, head football coach at YHS. “And I didn’t have enough answers to adjust to in game to get some stops. We did have some missed assignments, but those naturally happen in games.”

Flagler Palm Coast scored three unanswered touchdowns in the first half, scoring once in the first quarter and twice in the second to take a 21-0 first-half lead.

The Hornets play at Raines Friday in a district showdown. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m.

“Myself and my coaching staff will have our team more prepared to compete this week,” Dougherty said. “This was a good wakeup call for all of us. We are not yet where we want to be, and there is a clear path to the things that we need to get fixed.

“I’m excited for the opportunity of this week. A test of where we are in comparison to one of the better teams in the entire country. Raines is a group that can play with the best in the nation.”

Yulee is back home Friday, Oct. 31, with Pedro Menendez for the regular season finale. Game time is 7 p.m.
