New accessible playground opens at Fort Clinch State Park

Staff report

Fort Clinch State Park has unveiled a new state-of-the-art accessible playground, offering children of all abilities a chance to play together in one of Nassau County’s most historic settings.

“Today we are celebrating something truly special, a brand new state of the art accessible playground right here at Fort Clinch State Park,” said Bob Sell of the Friends of Fort Clinch.

The $65,000 project was made possible through a partnership between the Friends of Fort Clinch, the Florida State Parks Foundation and the Delores Barr Weaver Legacy Funds.

Located a short walk from the park’s historic 19th century fort, the playground features universal accessibility for visitors using wheelchairs and mobility devices. The facility includes ground level play zones, sensory activities and inclusive swing and picnic areas designed to accommodate children of varying abilities.

The project is part of a larger accessibility initiative funded by Jacksonville philanthropist Delores Barr Weaver, who pledged $500,000 over five years to expand accessibility across Fla. state parks.

“This beautiful new playground is more than just equipment. It’s a space for laughter, inclusion and memories that will last for generations,” Sell said.

Fort Clinch State Park management, park rangers and senior maintenance mechanic Tim Fisher worked to install the equipment and bring the playground to life.

The Friends of Fort Clinch is a nonprofit organization that supports the preservation of natural and cultural resources at Fort Clinch State Park while providing recreational and educational opportunities to the public.
