The Pirate Players invite you to connect with your inner ogre, as the Fernandina Beach High School thespians bring the reluctant green hero to life with their rendition of “Shrek The Musical.” It’s opening night, and the show runs through Sunday in the Fernandina Beach Middle School auditorium.
The cast is predominately comprised of FBHS students, but also includes students from FBMS.
Alejandro Carrion-Jones, a junior at FBHS, plays Shrek. Julia Taylor is Fiona, and she is also the choreographer for the show. Donkey is played by Sophie Kelly, who said it’s her “dream role,” according to the program.
Members of the National Honor Society painted the set.
FBHS math teacher Haley Vonnoh is the director of “Shrek The Musical.” She said Pirate Players is an afterschool program, and the students perform for fun not a grade.
“This year, we added some of the eighth-grade drama students to our production,” Vonnoh said.
She said rehearsals started in October, and the cast has been rehearsing twice a week after school and on Saturdays this month in the final stretch of preparations for the show’s opening.
The musical is based on the DreamWorks animated movie of the same name.
“Same plot and characters, but with new, great songs added,” Vonnoh said.
Show time is 7 p.m. today, Jan. 22, through Saturday, Jan. 24, and there is a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Jan. 25. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Purchase tickets at gofan.co.
