Amelia Island Sailing Club continued its monthly race series in July and August. With vacation season in full swing and many boat owners traveling, just three boats came to the start line on Saturday, July 9, at 10 a.m. for the 7.9-nautical mile race in and around Cumberland Sound. It was a beautiful, sunny day and, despite a concern that the winds might subside, the 6-10 mph west-southwest winds held up for the race and a potential shortening of the race course was not needed.
High tide at 10:17 a.m. meant that for most of the light-air race the tide was incoming, before slacking then turning to outgoing. Bill Kavanaugh’s Tiger Tale, with granddaughter Anna Kavanaugh on the helm, finished the course at 12:01:50 after just over two hours of racing.
John Drake, sailing alone on On Eagle’s Wings, finished at 12:14:34. Impacted most by the current, Gary Sanders and crew brought Salty Sally across the finish line at 12:38:39. After applying the PHRF time handicaps, Tiger Tale held onto first place, with On Eagle’s Wings finishing in second place less than four minutes behind, and Salty Sally in third place for the day.
