JV Pirates beat Indians 9-2

The junior varsity Pirates pushed their record to 3-3-1 with a 9-2 victory over the visiting Keystone Heights Indians on Feb. 26. The Fernandina Beach High School JV baseball team wasted little time, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a commanding 6-1 lead.

The Pirates added three more in the bottom of the second inning. Keystone scored its second run in the top of the fifth.

The Pirates travel to Bolles tonight, March 3, and they are back home Friday, March 6, with the Yulee Hornets. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. Purchase tickets at gofan.co.

FBHS opened its season with a 20-0 shutout over Hilliard on Feb. 10. The JV Pirates edged Wolfson 5-4 on Feb. 23.

Losses have been to Baldwin, Bishop Kenny and Fletcher, and the Pirates also tied Fletcher in an earlier matchup.

Varsity Pirates 7-1

The varsity Pirates rolled to 7-1 with road wins over Wolfson and Keystone Heights last week.

The FBHS varsity baseball team beat host Wolfson 10-1 on Feb. 24, and three Pirates had home runs.

Conner Bayless and Trace Farmer had three hits apiece. Bayless had a pair of doubles, a home run and seven RBIs. Farmer also had a home run. Landen Holbrook had a pair of hits, including a home run. He and Farmer had an RBI apiece. Preston Matricardi had a double.

Grady Stevens was the winning pitcher. He gave up two hits, walked two and struck out eight batters in four innings.

The Pirates walloped Keystone Heights 17-4 two days later. Matricardi led the charge at the plate, with a double and a single and four RBIs. Farmer had two hits and a pair of RBIs, and John Addington had two hits and an RBI.

Farmer got the win on the mound. He gave up two runs on two hits, walked one and struck out two in two innings. Lincoln Pertkiewicz struck out three and walked two in three innings. He gave up just one hit.

The Pirates are at home today, March 3, with Bolles. Game time is 6:30 p.m. They head to Yulee Friday, March 6, for the latest installment of the Battle of the Bridge. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. Purchase tickets at gofan.co.
