Hilliard Elementary students elect mock town council representatives

Staff report

Hilliard Elementary School fifth-graders participated in a student election Wednesday to select town council representatives from each class who will attend a mock town council meeting at Hilliard town hall next week.

The hands-on civic learning experience, coordinated with the Town of Hilliard and the Nassau County Supervisor of Elections Office, gave students the opportunity to learn about the democratic process and local government firsthand.

“The elected council members will attend the upcoming Hilliard town hall mock council meeting next week, where they will take part in a hands-on civic learning experience,” said a recent social media post from Hilliard Elementary School.

During the upcoming mock council meeting, several third-grade students will also be recognized for their “If I were Mayor” essays.

“We hope each student was able to learn something from the experience, and we wish the best of luck to those who will be representing their class at the upcoming town council meeting,” said a recent social media post from the Nassau County Supervisor of Elections Office.
