Nassau County residents faced dangerously cold wind chills Monday morning as a Cold Weather Advisory remains active across Northeast Florida. While actual temperatures hover in the upper 30s in the area, wind gusts reaching nearly 40 mph at the coast are driving wind chill values to feel like the high 20s or even the teens in northern parts of the county.
The dangerous conditions pose a risk for anyone spending extended time outdoors, particularly children waiting for buses. Forecasters anticipate the cold snap will persist, with Tuesday morning expected to bring wind chills in the 20s again before a gradual warm-up begins Wednesday. Residents should secure any loose outdoor items, as wind advisories remain active throughout the afternoon. Temperatures are expected to return to the mid-70s by the end of the week.
Local warming centers activated
To protect vulnerable populations, the Coalition for the Homeless of Nassau County (CHNassau) has activated cold night shelters, which open when temperatures fall below 42 degrees Fahrenheit. Residents needing shelter should check CHNassau’s website or Facebook page for real-time activation status and hours.
Key cold night shelters include the MLK Jr. Recreation Center at 1200 Elm St. in Fernandina Beach and the Callahan Methodist Church at 449648 U.S. 301 in Callahan. These sites offer cots, blankets and basic needs. The CHNassau Day Drop-In Center at 1005 S. 14th St. in Fernandina Beach offers daytime support and resources; for more information, visit chnassau.com/gethelp.
