City of Fernandina Beach project updates for the week of Sept. 1, 2025

Welcome to this edition of our weekly community update, designed to keep you informed about ongoing developments and initiatives throughout our city. This week’s report features highlights of recent progress, updates on municipal projects, and key announcements impacting our community. Providing transparency and engagement is both a privilege and a responsibility we take seriously. Your input and involvement continue to play a vital role in shaping our collective decisions and establishing priorities as we work together toward our shared goals.

  • Florida Public Utilities continues work on its storm protection plan. This work consists of undergrounding utilities in select locations and the cutting back of encroaching limbs from power lines. Its vegetation management plan results in pruning on a four-year cycle.
  • The Florida League of Cities has published a Property Tax Educational Toolkit that provides information to specific municipalities. It can be viewed on its website: flcities.com/FloridaFormulaToolkit
  • The repair of manhole covers on South Eighth Street is still in progress. Expect partial lane closures during these repairs.
  • The City’s budget process continues on schedule. On Sept. 3, the City Commission will hold a public hearing and vote on the final millage rate and the tentative budget.
  • The future of the iconic 47-year-old Peg-Leg Pete statue is currently under review by engineers and local boards. This signature pirate stands on Centre Street in front of the Amelia Island Welcome Center in downtown Fernandina Beach.
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, cut down the escarpment lines on City beaches as part of the Shore Stabilization project’s post-construction activity.
  • City staff is working with FDOT on installing a crosswalk at the intersection of Jasmine and South Fletcher to increase pedestrian safety.
  • City Utilities crews have been working between the rains to install a new drainage system on North Second Street.

  • The City’s Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a free, fun for all ages Fall Festival on Sept. 20, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Atlantic Recreation Center (2500 Atlantic Ave). The event will feature games, prizes, treats, a floating pumpkin patch activity at the pool, and more! Bring your own suit and towel for the floating pumpkin patch. Call (904) 310-3350 for info.
