
Welcome to this edition of our weekly community update, designed to keep you informed about ongoing developments and initiatives throughout our city. This week’s report features highlights of recent progress, updates on municipal projects, and key announcements impacting our community. Providing transparency and engagement is both a privilege and a responsibility we take seriously. Your input and involvement continue to play a vital role in shaping our collective decisions and establishing priorities as we work together toward our shared goals.
Projects/Operations:
- The first phase of street resurfacing begins on Monday, Oct. 27. This project involves resurfacing 1.5 miles of roads throughout the city. A bulk of the work will take place in Ocean Cay and Seaside subdivisions.
- The North Second Street streetscape redevelopment is nearly complete. Sidewalks and curbing have been installed and paving will occur next. This project is scheduled to be completed by Thanksgiving.
- Florida Public Utilities continues work on its storm protection plan. This work consists of undergrounding utilities in select locations, installing new poles and cutting back limbs from power lines.
- The MLK Jr. Sports Fields redevelopment is in the final stages of design. This project is being presented to the City Commission for feedback at the Nov. 4 City Commission workshop.
- Construction continues on the Buccaneer Trail project. This Nassau County managed project involves stormwater improvements and the construction of a new multiuse trail along the Amelia Island Parkway.
- A new pump-out boat, purchased via a Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) grant, has arrived at the Fernandina Beach Harbor Marina.
- Deputy Police Chief David Bishop was recognized via proclamation for his retirement after 40 years of dedicated service with the Fernandina Beach Police Department.
- After eight weeks of service, the city’s Grocery Getter shuttle has seen 64 total riders, an average of eight riders each week.
- Reminder to please keep your yard waste piles on the edge of the road, away from obstructions such as power lines or low-hanging limbs.
